Accurate returns across three jurisdictions.

Accurate tax returns across three jurisdictions

We prepare returns for the US and the UK, handle Canadian GST/HST, and support CPA firms with white-label preparation through busy season. We prepare; your CPA reviews and signs.

Veris Financials prepares tax returns for the United States and the United Kingdom, and files Canadian GST/HST returns. That covers Forms 1040, 1040-NR, 1120-S, 1065 and 1120 for the IRS, and SA100, CT600 and VAT returns for HMRC. Individual returns start at $100 and business returns at $600, with the fee fixed before work begins.

How it works

The process, start to finish

  1. Send your documentsW-2s, 1099s, K-1s and supporting records through secure transfer. We send a checklist so nothing is missed on the first pass.
  2. We prepare and documentThe return is prepared, deductions supported, and every position documented in workpapers rather than left as a number with no story.
  3. Review and fileYou or your CPA reviews, requests changes, signs and files. Nothing is filed without a signature from the person legally responsible.

What you receive

  • Prepared federal, state and foreign returns
  • Tick-and-tie workpapers supporting every position
  • A summary of positions taken and their basis
  • E-file authorization forms ready for signature

Who this is for

  • CPA firms needing preparation capacity through busy season
  • Businesses filing in more than one country
  • Individuals with 1040, 1040-NR or multi-state returns
  • J-1 and other visa holders with treaty positions

How we handle your data

The same controls apply to every engagement, whether you are a sole trader or a 40-partner firm.

  • Encrypted file transferClient files move over encrypted channels. Nothing sensitive travels as an email attachment.
  • Role-based accessStaff see only the engagements they are assigned to. Access is revoked the day it is no longer needed.
  • NDAs and DPAs as standardA mutual NDA and a data processing agreement are signed before the first file moves, not after the pilot goes well.
  • US-managed reviewA US-based manager reviews work before it reaches you. The review layer is the product, not a courtesy.

J-1 visa and non-resident returns: Form 1040-NR

Most J-1 visa holders are non-resident aliens for tax purposes and must file Form 1040-NR, not Form 1040. Filing the wrong form is the most common error in this group, and consumer tax software is usually the cause, because most of it is built for residents and quietly produces a 1040.

Two things are commonly left on the table. The first is a tax treaty position: the US has treaties with more than 60 countries, and many exempt a defined amount of income for students, trainees, teachers and researchers. Claiming it requires the correct treaty article cited on the return. The second is a FICA refund. Employers frequently withhold Social Security and Medicare from J-1 wages when the exemption applies, and that money is recoverable, but it takes a claim rather than a checkbox.

We prepare 1040-NR returns from $100, including the treaty analysis and the FICA refund claim where one applies. That is a person preparing your return, not software asking you to self-assess your own residency status.

If you are on a J-1 visa specifically, our J-1 visa tax return service covers the whole picture: Form 1040-NR, Form 8843, treaty claims, the FICA refund and any state returns.

Which US business return does your entity file?

It depends on the entity type and, for LLCs, on which tax election has been made. The table below covers the common cases.

US federal business return by entity type. All start from $600, federal plus one state.
EntityFederal returnWhat comes with it
Single-member LLC (default)Schedule C on Form 1040Self-employment tax, quarterly estimates
Multi-member LLC or partnershipForm 1065Schedule K-1 per partner, capital account tracking
LLC or corporation with S electionForm 1120-SSchedule K-1 per shareholder, basis tracking, reasonable salary
C-CorporationForm 1120Schedule M-1 or M-3, entity-level tax

Can you file a return for a prior year?

Yes. Late returns and amended returns for prior years are routine work rather than an exception.

Two practical points. Refunds generally expire: a refund claim must usually be filed within three years of the original due date, so an unfiled 2022 return still has value while an unfiled 2018 one probably does not. And where the unfiled years involve foreign accounts or income, quietly filing the back years and making a formal voluntary disclosure carry different consequences. We tell you which route fits your facts before you commit to one.

Do you sign and file the return?

For CPA firm work, no. Your firm reviews, signs and files under its own PTIN, and we prepare to your standards with workpapers your reviewer can follow.

For individuals and businesses engaging us directly, we prepare the return, walk you through it, and tell you clearly at the outset who is signing. We would rather be explicit about that than let a client assume they have bought something they have not. See our CPA firm model for how the white-label side works.

Tax Preparation: questions we get asked

Do you sign and file the return?

For CPA firm work, no. We prepare and your firm reviews, signs and files under its own PTIN. For individuals engaging us directly, we prepare the return and walk you through it, and we tell you clearly at the outset who is signing.

What does a return cost?

Individual returns start at $100 for a 1040-NR and $150 for a simple federal 1040. Business returns (1120-S, 1065, 1120) start at $600. Our full price ladder is on the pricing page, and the quote you get is fixed before work starts.

Can you handle a J-1 visa or non-resident return?

Yes. Form 1040-NR, tax treaty analysis, and FICA refund claims where Social Security and Medicare were withheld in error are a routine part of our work, not an edge case.

Can you file for prior years?

Yes. Late and amended returns for prior years are standard work. We will also tell you honestly whether filing quietly or making a voluntary disclosure is the better route, because those have different consequences.
